Gaseous atmospheres that may occur in areas such as tanker ships or port facilities pose a risk of explosion due to sparking or excessive heat build-up. In these situations, ex motors with special safety features are a must. That’s why BEN Buchele has developed a pressure-resistant encapsulated ex motor for the highest explosion group IIC, combining powerful performance with advanced protective features.
In marine applications, we can use clear definitions for hazardous zones. Critical Zones 1 and 0, where explosive atmospheres are present either occasionally or constantly, require pressure-resistant encapsulated motors – so that no spark or hot particle can escape. Our Ex motor d is designed for these requirements: it is certified for the highest explosion group IIC – this even covers hydrogen, a highly explosive and easily ignitable gas. The motor’s temperature rating is also vital for certification, making sure the motor’s surface doesn’t reach ignition temperature for any gas that may be present. The BEN Ex motor d is designed for class T4, with a maximum surface temperature of 135°C.
Special Feature: Brake Function
This model features an integrated electromagnetic spring-applied brake with a braking torque of 3,300 Nm. This provides reliable, secure braking for applications such as anchor and mooring winches, conveyor belts or crane systems.
A Unique Combination
Our pressure-resistant encapsulated motor stands out thanks to its impressive list of features: output (50 to 200 kW), frame size (280), degrees of protection (IP56 to IP68), hazardous area rating, temperature class and integrated brake function. Its robust cast iron construction makes it ideal for tough conditions – such as saltwater, salty air or extreme temperatures (from -35°C to +50°C). Depending on what’s required, the motor can be supplied without a fan, with a built-in fan or with forced ventilation, supporting both continuous (S1) and short-cycle (S2, S3) operation.
Customisation for 1-to-1 Replacement
One major advantage for our customers: if explosion-safety regulations change and standard motors no longer meet compliance, you won’t need to redesign your entire system. True to our manufacturing philosophy, each pressure-resistant encapsulated motor is customized to your requirements, enabling smooth, one-to-one motor replacement. In most cases, your existing connections and pipework can stay right where they are. Optional add-ons such as incremental encoders, backstops, standstill heaters, relubrication systems, or bearing monitoring can be included to suit your application.

Other Application Areas: Offshore, Chemical Industry, Ventilation
Along with maritime applications, our pressure-resistant encapsulated motor with brake function is used offshore, in the chemical and petrochemical industries, for gas pipeline cooling or in HVAC and ventilation systems.
